This educational intervention study found that participation in a skills-based health literacy workshop enhanced medical students' communication during a standardized patient examination compared to students who had not completed the workshop. These results show that literacy-appropriate communication is a teachable skill. A previous AHRQ WebM&M interview discussed the importance of health literacy for patient safety.
