Using a claims data-based sentinel system to improve compliance with clinical guidelines: results of a randomized prospective study.
The use of information technology as a method to improve care is growing, and this randomized trial compared the use of a clinical decision support system (CDSS) to improve provider adherence with best practices. The system contained more than 1000 decision rules capable of providing clinical recommendations, and more than 900 recommendations were issued to the intervention group. Findings in the intervention group included fewer hospitalizations as well as lower charges and paid claims. The authors conclude that proper design and implementation of CDSS can provide improved patient outcomes and reduce costs.
