The digitization of health care data has had some positive effects on patient safety, but it has also created new patient safety concerns. This commentary provides an overview of implementing paperless technologies in health care, including the positive effects (e.g., speed and efficiency) and negative effects (e.g., interoperability and digital rights management). The author outlines three laws to ensure safety when going paperless.
