Labeling solutions and medications in sterile procedural settings.
In response to a 2006 National Patient Safety Goal (NPSG), this article shares the experiences of a single institution in developing a policy and protocol to address appropriate labeling. The authors begin with a case study presentation followed by an outline of the requirements for this particular NPSG, and then discuss the efforts made in specific clinical areas where sterile procedures occur. The discussion continues with a series of shared lessons learned from the experience and a number of suggestions offered to other institutions working towards meeting the standards of this patient safety issue. An example of the actual policy created for Marion General Hospital's operating room is also included.
