This study describes adverse events discovered in 815 consecutive admissions to a medical service. Results report an overall 36% rate of iatrogenesis, the frequency and type of events, and the associated factors with each event. Exposure to drugs represented a particularly important factor in determining which patients experienced complications. The authors conclude that, while benefits of hospitalization will continue to exist, mechanisms to study its hazards also must receive emphasis to minimize the occurrence of adverse events.
