Use of pulse oximetry during surgery is a key component of the World Health Organization's Safe Surgery Saves Lives program, but this technology is not widely available in resource-poor areas. This study provided oximeters and training in four developing countries, and investigated the appropriateness of their use and the systems required to ensure uptake and continued use.
