Cognitive load can increase patient safety risks (such as prescribing errors) but less is known about its effect on wellbeing of health care professionals. Among a sample of US physicians, the authors of this study found that all dimensions of cognitive task load (mental demand, physical demand, time demand, and effort required) were strongly related to burnout, independent of physician age, gender, practice setting, specialty, and hours worked per week.
