Impact of pharmacist previsit input to providers on chronic opioid prescribing safety.
In this pilot study, a clinical pharmacist reviewed charts for adult patients with chronic pain who were prescribed more than 50 morphine milligram equivalents per day and made prescribing recommendations to providers before patient appointments. The intervention led to a 14% decrease in morphine milligram equivalents per day without a change in pain reported by patients and improved adherence to prescribing guidelines.
